It’s funny.
I see a collection of fetishes on display, and I think God, that’s just stupid. Loli mecha musume catgirls working in the military to save the world with guns and tails and magical powers — who each represent a different panty preference of their pathetic fans.
How horrible can you get?
Know what would be better? A harem that includes a childhood friend and a shy glasses girl who happen to be gun-toting undercover operatives (the latter with magical powers) for the American and Japanese governments, along with a crew of alien catgirls in bodysuits — who each represent a different bust size preference of their clever, tongue-in-cheek fans.
Get it?
Not going to go into the whole “guilty pleasures” thing, ghostlightning wrote way more words than I’ll ever devote to the topic of “it’s a stupid concept” and came to the same basic conclusion. If you can absolve yourself of the guilt you get from the things that bring you pleasure, you’ll be a happier person — albeit with a slightly looser grasp on irony, but happy.
There are differences, sure. Strike Witches plays the whole thing with a straight face while Asobi is a little more winking. Your preference may vary for which treatment works, but you (I?) shouldn’t be using either as an excuse for why one is “better” than the other. In matters of taste, etc, etc, and the truth is I just plain like Asobi. Can’t help it.
Maybe it’s the appealing character designs, or the almost retro-feeling girls with guns sequences, or maybe it’s just the pervasive sense of fun throughout. But I enjoy it. I think it’s probably rotting my brain, but not everything can be Yuasa and Oshii.
